Colleges in the Spotlight Series:
Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon is a college of approximately 3,400 undergraduate and graduate students, located on a scenic, wooded hilltop in the outer edges of Portland. The campus is on a former pastoral estate, with gorgeous and expansive green lawns, fountains, and decorative gardens. It tends to attract high-achieving, involved, adventurous students, and though accepts standardized test scores in the admissions process, also offers a unique academic "Portfolio Path" for admissions for those who do not want to submit test scores.
The student body has a reputation for being socially conscious, and the college offers students numerous courses, research opportunities, and occasions to participate in campus initiatives related to sustainability. Not surprisingly, Biology and Environmental Studies are among the most popular majors at Lewis & Clark. Additionally, U.S. News and World Report has identified Lewis & Clark as among the best in the nation for its Overseas Studies program. Over 60% of Lewis & Clark students participate in a Study Abroad program, with options in over 30 countries. International Affairs and Foreign Languages are also among the strongest, most popular majors.
Though considered to offer a very strong education in liberal arts, Lewis & Clark also offers some unique programs such as the 3-2 Engineering program. Students enrolled in that program spend 3 years at Lewis & Clark with a concentration in math, chemistry, physics, or economics. They then spend their last 2 years completing rigorous engineering studies at either Columbia University in New York City, Washington University in St. Louis, or the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Students earn dual degrees, one from each university they attend.
On weekends the curious and outdoor-loving student body often makes use of college-sponsored ski, hiking, and camping trips, and even the occasional beach excursion. A little closer to home, the downtown area of Portland is only 15 minutes away, offering great coffee houses, restaurants, art galleries, and shops for mellower days when students just want to relax and enjoy a friendly social outing.
